The date is February 14, 1945. King Abdul Aziz Ibn Abdul Rahman Al-Saud meets with President Franklin D. Roosevelt at the Great Bitter Lake in the Suez Canal . The meeting does not make headlines because America was still focused on winning WWII which would soon come to an end. What America didn't know was the the reason we were winning that war was primarily because we were able to produce 100% of our own oil. This oil allowed our industries to build weapons at a pace never before seen in world history. The problem was that the war had depleted our reserves by a full 1/3. We no longer had the capacity to produce the oil we needed to power our nation. We needed an ally to produce the oil for us and in return we swore to protect that ally at all costs. This decision has dominated our foreign policy ever since this meeting.
Every President since FDR, Democrat and Republican, has based his entire economic and foreign policy on oil. Every single President since FDR has been a friend of the Saudis. We chide world leaders all the time for human rights violations. We declare economic sanctions in the name of freedom against represive regimes. All the while Saudi Arabia is one of the worst dictatorships on the face of the earth.
Does anyone remember that 8 of the 14 terrorists that are responsible for 9/11 were from Saudi Arabia? One was from the United Arab Emirate. Why hasn't the question been raised about why people from a countries that are supposed to be our allies would attack us?The reason for the attack? They wanted to draw America's attention to Saudi Arabia. It almost succeeded, but Bush and Congress once again diverted our attention away from the very nation that bred those terrorists. Its amazing. Not one terrorist was Iraqi or even linked to Iraq in any way!!!
We ended up in Iraq. The reason was simple. We could kill 2 birds with one stone. Make America forget it was Saudis, Egyptians and United Arab Emirates people who attacked us and at the same time go in the middle east and secure the oil fields. What a perfect excuse. Tell the American people the terrorists are in Iraq and get control of the oil fields at the same time. Tell America we are going in to spread "democracy." Bush is not unique in this. Presidents from both parties have set their foreign policy around having access to oil.
After the fall of the Shah of Iran in 1979. US policy changed. Instead of looking for puppets that would fight for our interests. We would commit our own troops to protect our own interests. What are our interests? Democracy? Freedom? Peace? No. Our interest is oil. It has been oil since 1945 and unless we get serious about developing our own supplies and developing alternative fuels oil will be the bane to our very existence.
We have heard every President for the last 50 years talk of us stopping our dependence on foreign oil, all of them lied to us. One President did try to break us of our addiction, Jimmy Carter. He started the country moving in a direction away from oil and into alternative energy. He was blindsided by a discovery of oil in Alaska in the North Slope. This discovery made the price of oil plummet and made Carter seem like a fear monger. Ronald Reagan utilized this opening to win the election and began his policies of steadily marching America back to its addiction on oil. Since the discovery, energy was cheap again. Reagan and his administration decided to use our new found wealth to finance the start of the greatest economic exapnsion in history. Instead of paying as we go, he decided to use deficit spending using the old adage the most business people use. "Lets not use our money, lets use other people's money (OPM). While politically this was a polpular position to take, it lead to the highest debt (until now) that any nation in the history of the world had ever seen.
Our foreign policy has been dominated by oil for the last 60 years. Every single war since WWII, every single conflict. Every single boom and bust has been because of oil. Every single one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I will end here, but my point is this. Before we pull the lever in that voting booth, lets all make up our minds that we are going to kick the oil habit. Democrats and Republican. Independents, Libertarians whatever we may call ourselves. We are in this mess because of our own greed and addictions. The leaders we choose will do as we say. If we say we want to drive our Hummers and Suburbans and light up our night clubs they will make sure we have the energy to do it. Even if it means that they have to send our sons and daughter to their deaths in places we never heard of.
